Just bought this quad for my 2 1/2 y.o. son. He loves it!. It actually looks very realistic. It seems nice and sturdy and I believe the max weight limit is @130lbs. My 8 y.o. daughter has even ridden on it with him and it pulls them both along nicely. It will run for about 2.5 hours before showing signs of charge loss and about 3 hours total til dead. It did have some traction issues on grass (but they all do), so I installed the power/traction bands and it seemed to help a lot. Now I don't have to push him up hills. All in all I would rate this a great buy, based on speed, (3 of them, 2 fwd and 1 reverse), features including padded seat, a little bit of suspension, definitely the looks and also has 3 quad sounds that it makes. I paid $177 at wal-mart for it. In the essence of safety and setting him up to be safe I make him wear a helmet whenever he rides it and have also installed a remote kill switch (see my post on the "pimped out" forum for more info). Hope this helps. |

I thought a pic might be helpful if you're trying to size it up to your kid. Here is a pic of my son who is 2.5 yrs old and about 31" tall. He reaches the pedal well and is able to turn it fully from side 2 side.

I bought one of these in August from Wal-Mart and at the six month mark, the computer stopped working, so I hard-wired it and had no reverse. It's such a pain in the butt to work on, so I eventually salvaged the motors, gearboxes, and gas-pedal to an old PW jeep. Had a nice front-end though!

We had one for a while that I got out of the trash. I think I paid too much. It was crap but I think the newer ones are good.
First, one rear wheel had separated all the way around the tread where the 2 plastic pieces were molded together. This made it totally unridable. I exchanged several emails with Dumar trying to convince them that it was a factory defect and not use/abuse. The tires actually had very little wear at all. After about 2 or 3 months they finally sent me a wheel for free. Funny thing is, about a month later they sent me yet another wheel. Accounting goof-up I guess.
The other problem was the steering. Yeah it's steel but it flexed horribly which made it nearly undriveable. The steering shaft was the same diameter from handle bars all the way to the bottom. The way it is bent was just bad design. I can't even begin to describe how bad it was flexing. The newer models have a 1/2" steel pipe welded around the middle length of the shaft. Much better!

Here's how I fixed mine...
First, throw it in a dumpster. If the dumpster is full and it falls back out then drag it home and list it on craigslist for 50 bucks. Take the first offer over 30 bucks and use the cash to buy wire, connectors, LED bulbs, and spray paint to mod your cars that are worth fixing. That's how I did it and it worked great!
Ok that' s probably not too helpful, but my dad always told me "you can't polish a turd." Those gearboxes are just pure crap and I think you'd spend more time, money and effort than it's work to fix it.
I bet you could salvage the gears and motors from an old barbie jeep and get it going again.
Oh, actually, now that I think about it, the on/off switch is really crappy on those things. Try using your vold meter (or just wire around it) and test the on/off switch first. Mine was so bad you could only turn it on and off with a pair of vice grips (I wanted to turn it off with a sledgehammer soooo many times!).
I can't believe you haven't had the rear tires split apart yet! Both of ours did. The one thing I will say good about it is that the wheels go on/off with a nut and not the press-on retainers. They probable knew we'd have to replace defective tires a lot.
Soooo....check the switch first. Then check the forward/reverse and hi/low switches. I'd bet even money it's one of those.
It's more fun when you can do it for free! |

I like the dumpster idea. I suggest if it is under 12 months old take it back for a full refund. Don't let them try and swap it for another one, just get your full money back and buy somthing better.

Yeah that's the best thing. Here's a trick I learned...NEVER ask for a refund. The manager does not want to lose stor volume (the amount of money he takes in each day) and returns for cash count as lost volume. Always tell them that the product is defective and that you'd like to pay the difference and upgrade to something better.
Normally they'll just give you store credit which is great with me. Once in a while they will actually walk you back to select something else. Also not a problem for me.
Be careful at Wal-Mart. They only allow something like 3 returns every 3 months or you'll get flagged.
Here's an example of how I've used this one: I bought a Scwinn s350 scooter (huge pile of crap) for $35 on craigslist. The guy said it needed to be charged but it clearly had a burned up speed control which would have cost me about 15 bucks to fix. Instead, I took it to Wal-Mart and told them it was bought there and was broken (true statements since they are the only sellers of that model/color). With no reciept or box they wouldn't do a refund or store credit but were happy to upgrade to the new s500 for free. I then took the s500, new in the box, and got 200 bucks for it on craigslist. I don't feel a bit guilty either. Those are horrible scooters and they shouldn't sell them for that price with those crappy speed controls. Oh, and the guy who gave me $200 for the s500 took it to wal-mart and for around $250 in store credit for it and bought a Peg Perego for his kids. Can't beat a new gator for 35 bucks and a litle leg work! :)

I've been eyeing the Razor Quad since before Christmas...what makes the Mongoose so much better? I was/am pretty impressed with the Razor the couple times I saw it in the store, plus it has a faster top speed than the Mongoose.

Faster top end because Mongoose has a MASSIVE gear reduction. It's got incredible torque and will never bog down. It can hop up a curb from a dead stop. Also, it has adjustable coil-over shocks on the front and rear. I don't think the razor has much of a suspension. Does the razor have disc brakes? The mongoose has awesome disc brakes in the rear. Also, the Mongoose has AMAZING lights and a deent horn built in. It's got a bazillion LED lights in the rear and a few in front and a strobe that put on a show while also keeping your kids visible to cars, trucks, and most commercial aircraft. Seriously, it's like driving Studio 54 at night.
Of course, I think the minimoto quad beats them both...but that's a story for another day. :)
I think the only thing that the razor has an edge on is size. I believe it is a little bigger.

UPDATE: Well, I am sorry to hear that a few of you have had bad luck with this quad. I (my son) is going on a year now with this quad and we have not had ANY problems with it. He has ridden the heck out of it, as well as ride his 9 year old sister along with him on it at times. The remote kill switch mod I installed on it initially, lasted about 4 months before it died. I think it got a little wet!! hmmm...wonder how that happened ??? The most beneficial mod I did was the bicycle tire over the treads mod like one of the other members did in another post. IT WORKS AWSOME!!! This allows it to go almost ANYWHERE. So anyway, .... I am still sticking to MY opinion that this is a great little ride for your 2-4 yr. olds.....Oh yeah, one more thing, buy the extra battery from Gruber. It's worth it to always have a spare one charged up and ready to go! |

| FYI: It took me a little while to figure out the obvious, but for the 18V upgrade I simply laid a 6v battery on it's side on top of a piece of foam directly on top of the 12V battery under the seat. If you notice the underside of the seat is notched out nicely and it holds the 6v in place really well....not to mention a nice performance increase .............well worth the couple of extra bucks!!...........just some info for the curious :) |

| Got one for my 2 1/2 year old son about 3 months ago. He rides it every day for at least an hour. I modified the wheels with bike tires and added a headlight. Also if your looking to buy, the battery definitely lasts longer on the Raptor than the bigger heavier quads and the wheel mod makes it go places the 4X4 cant follow. Best thing I could have ever gotten him. When he goes for rides he says "happy happy!" |

| I just bought a Raptor for my boys B-day. I'd like to add BMX traction but there are conflicting stories about trashing the gear boxes. I'm new to this and don't want to get into a big project right out of the gates. Can the newer Dumar machines handle it better. What idiot came up with plastic wheels on an ATV? Any suggestions? |

RAPTOR SMOKIN, BROKEN AND HERES HOW TO FIX IT I have had mountain bike treads on my sons raptor for months and have had almost zero complications. Just 1 popped fuse. Until, going up a steep hill in deep grass it blew. Pedaling the quad home on a bicycle trailer with my disgruntled son also blew. Any way, I got home and exposed all the wiring. With no visible clues to the origin of the malfunction I bipassed components 1 by 1. Turns out it was a little box that looks kind of like a tiny car stereo amplifier. Reassembling the wiring without that box didn';t work until I started fresh. I connected three things that make it much faster, stronger and more dangero. . . I mean fun. Battery, foot switch and two motors. Both motors are wired in sync. No reverse, hand brakes and one full throttle speed. If you want to see it, e-mail me and I'll send you video of the Raptor going through mud as high as the floor boards. Next step is screwing ten inch lengths of chain to the tires so I get the kid to plow my driveway. |

Hmmm... I think the battery booster can't have mattered that much, since it doesn't increase the voltage, only the available power... but or course it also adds some weight. I suppose you mean a Power Wheels Jeep that was towed, right? Did that jeep had working motor brakes? If so, it probably will have been very hard to tow, hence the broken motor. |

Aww. Thanks for this photo. I'm going home after 3 months. I have 3 kids already & I am planning to purchase another Raptor 250R for my second son. He's quite bigger than your son but this photo just gave me a nice look with him on this ride. Thanks man! ________________________________________

I bought an ATV rechargeable for my 2 yr old daughter too. I think I made a mistake since she is a girl. Barbie should be the things she wants. Now she likes to play Guns and Guitars.

| Yes, but look at it as an investment in her future. There is a word to describe the sort of young man that romantically persues a girl that knows guitars, guns, and motorbikes.... Respectful. |
Colbert: So the AK-47 is like the Windows platform of guns, it's everywhere.
Pike: No, no. It's MUCH more reliable than that.

| We had prob w/ the battery. Toy 9 mo old. I called 1-866-424-0500 a CS rep told me to check the fuse that is on top of the battery, it was blown. I replaced it, still did not work. Told me I will need scissors, flat and phillips screw driver. Prop something under the back wheels so they are off the ground, make sure the battery is unhooked. locate the gas pedal, reach under the sideboard and hit it (may take a few hits) to pop the grey box out. Look under it, there are 4 screws, unscrew them. You will see 3 wires red, yellow, and black. The wire has black plastic wraped around the bottom of it, cut it off with scissors (DO NOT CUT THE WIRE). You will see a small clip thing about the size of a sugar ant where the wire connects to the switch, push in with flathead and pull wire to unhook from switch. Repeat steps with yellow wire. touch the two wires together where metal is and the back tires should spin. If that works try it in all gears. on the switch you will see 3 prongs that the wires were hooked to across from them you should see 3 more prongs. unhook the black wire and plug in the wires on the other side and it should work, ours did. I hope this helps, good luck |
