Not long after working on the Yellow Jeep (http://modifiedpowerwheels.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7720), I picked up a $10 faded, chalky PW Jeep (78490). Other than motor not wanting to run in one direction, (aside from being filthy) everything else worked. If anything, I figured I'd use it for parts. But then, I thought, wouldn't it be cool to do any Army Jeep Willy's theme? I perused thru the forums and was inspired by others' works to start. I wanted to give them the acknowledgement for the inspiration they gave me to do this project.
Preparation for painting sucked... the plastic was so chalky and chipped easily... I took out my palm sander and I think I made some areas worse by scratching it up gretty good. I painted the underside with cheap $.97 flat black paint and used the Krylon Fusion OD paint for the body. It did a good job of hiding most of the problem areas, but I may have to come back and re-do the hood someday.
Update: Okay, I've since wet-sanded the hood and repainted it. SO MUCH BETTER NOW!!
18V
The junked jeep came with 2 older PW 6V batteries, which had the protrusion above the battery where the resettable fuse sat. Awesome! I yanked the fuses (& installed them in the Yellow Jeep)... then tossed the batteries in the battery recycle bin. I yanked three PW 6V batteries from my other Jeep (74440) and are using them in the Army Jeep for now. I also tapped some leads so they run back to the under-seat area (so I can run my Grubers while the PW batteries are charging).
SEPARATE BRAKE PEDALS
I ended up taking the pedal, plunger switch & resistor from the "other" Jeep (74440). I've always wanted to do this on Yellow Jeep, but since it's currently my favorite, I figured I'd test it here on the Army Jeep. I liked the idea of being able to turn on/off this feature, so basically, I took SWHENRIK's diagram & implemented it: (thread reference: http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2474)
I also used Wil's CD as a reference as well. But I liked SWHENRIK's wiring diagrams... it makes it really clear what goes where. Don't get me wrong, that CD is an excellent resource and was definitely worth the $12 I paid for it. I'd recommend it to anyone...

I was good about peeling the original dash decals off carefully. Originally, I was going to scan them in and reprint on Laserjet Vinyl adhesive paper... but then I realized they weren't in bad shape at all so after the painting (& cure time), I used spray adhesive and slapped them back on.
Now, I just gotta figure out the best way to mount the Jerry Can on the back and then finish the rubber tire mod... I think it may look cool with the "skinnier" $4 10" knobbies from Harbor Freight (the 13" may be too tall, esp. since this jeep doesn't have the lift kit). Right now, it's running at 18V. But I think I'll bring the jeep back to 12V with rubber tires to save the motors.
Side note: originally, I mentioned that one of the motors was defunct... However, after doing the separate break pedal mod, I must've fixed something because both motors have been working great since (fwd, high, & rev).

Also, here's a pic of the switch to turn on/off the separate brake pedal feature:
Originally, the switch was actually just two wires connected or disconnected to each other with quick disconnects... but I finally broke down and spent the three bucks for the Radio Shack switch to clean things up a bit.
I've also debated over whether I should've placed the switch on the dash where it's easily accessible or in the engine compartment (where it's not). On the dash, it can work like a handbrake to keep the vehicle in place when "parked" on an incline. But in the engine compartment, it will prevent accidental switching if someone not familiar with the concept of a separate brake pedal happens to be driving the jeep. Obviously, I chose the latter.

Glad to hear you liked the wiring diagram. I'm not sure if anyone has actually used it in it's entirety til now. I haven't because the only vehicles that have a sperate brake pedal also have scooter controllers.
RUBBER TIRE MOD So I decided to start the rubber tire mod on the ARMY JEEP....
I began by ordering these Oilite bushings from SmallParts.com. The bushings were necessary to increase the stock 7/16" axles up to 5/8" to accomodate the standard bore sizes for the pneumatic tires that are widely available.
I had to whip out the dremel and sand down the axles a bit... these bushings are a tight fit!
With some sanding and enough force, I slid the bushings onto the axle. I do plan to stick some type of spacer between the bushings. Even though they're on there pretty tight, they may eventually start slipping. The wheel's hub width is 3.5" and unfortunately, the longest Oilite bushing I could find were only 1".
As you can see here, I still need to hacksaw the excess length off of the axles... Also, I need to sand down the edge of the inside of the bumper as the wheels currently rub when fully turned.
Right now, the rear wheels are not yet attached to the gearbox drivers, so the jeep just "free wheels" at the moment.
Phase 2 of this mod will be attaching the drivers to the wheel (somehow).

Using WIL'S MOD CD as a reference, I was able to attach the drivers to the wheels. Although I didn't follow it 100%, the basic fundamentals were taken from the CD, so I don't think it would be cool for me to give out the details of the exact process or exact parts that were used.
Here are some pics of the completed tire mod:
You may notice that the front wheels are actually on there "backwards". If I had placed them on the other way, they seemed to stick out too far. (hmmmm... maybe I shudda taken a picture of that so ya'll can see what I'm talkin' about). I wonder if a dremel will be powerful enough for me to cut some of that "excess" hub off the front wheels?
I've gotta tell ya, there's so much traction now... it's actually pretty scary. Just for craps & giggles, I had him try it out at 18V, and when he made an abrupt turn, I thought he was gonna flip the jeep. And the Army Jeep's not even lifted... although these 13" wheels give a bit more height to the jeep versus the original 10" plastic ones.
I'm definitely keeping this one at 12V... for the time being.
Now, I just gotta get them wheels painted OD green.

I fully charged the batteries before this video and tested between 12V & 18V... & it's definitely staying on 12V... you'll see what I mean after watching.
FYI: In case you didn't notice in the video... at 18V, when Jonas attempts to turn, it's as if the Jeep is fighting it & wants to go straight, causing the front wheels to bounce around during the turn.
It's much clearer to see it happening in HD-mode... (it happens during 1:24 , 2:27, 3:15, & 3:22)

wow, did he lift the front tires off the ground there at the end? yeah 12v is probably a good idea...for now anyway
Yeah, 18V is fine going straight, but when he turns the wheel, it's like the Jeep is refusing to turn, so the front wheels just bounce around during the turn.
The other night when he was driving at 18V, it didn't bounce around but due to the increased traction, it looked like it was gonna flip when he made abrupt turns. My guess is that the batteries weren't fully charged that evening... I actually fully charged it for the video.

Unfortunately the unibody jeeps do not have a very sturdy steering rack, it may improve with some additional reinforcement. Decreasing the front tire pressure may also reduce some of the tire bounce.
Nice work. Only thing you need is a pedestal mount w/ a .30 cal. A .50 would be over doing it a bit. Making the windshield fold down would look neat too.

Oh man! You got the gears in my head turning now! I can use PVC piping painted OD and mount it to the "trunk" area behind the seat. Now, I gotta find me a simulated .30 or .50 cal or something. Do they make a 30 or 50 cal nerf or water gun? Time to google!

They make an airsoft .30 cal...but at $600, I don't think that would work. the 1919 is pretty basic in looks, a rectangular box w/ a tube sticking out the end and a pistol grip on the back. wouldn't be hard to make a close enough repro.
PAINTING I painted the underside with cheap $.97 flat black paint and used the Krylon Fusion OD paint for the body. MUCH BETTER NOW!!
Hey cfanto how is the underside holding up with the cheapy black paint?
So far, it's been holding great... then again he's never been in a scenario in which he'd end up scraping the bottom of the Jeep. Aside from thorough cleaning, I really didn't do any prep-work for the underside.
I also used the same el-cheapo Walmart paint to "black-out" the X-Treme Machine... & that's been holding out really well with him climbing in & out of the vehicle. However, underneath the front bumper piece, there are a couple of scrape marks showing the original yellow from him running it into obstacles. On the X-Treme Machine, I did use adhesion promoter prior to painting.

Wait so you used adhesion promoter just on the Extreme Machine and not the jeep or both?
I learned about using adhesion promoter right after the Jeep was done. Otherwise, I would've done it as well. I've had to "touch up" the jeep several times already... mainly due to the kids playing "crash derby" with each other... not sure if the adhesion promoter would've done anything against those types of occurances, though.

My question is are you sure you used Fushion or was it just the regular Krylon? Because they do make it in olive in the regular Krylon.
at 18V, Jonas has no problems steering. However, after the 3x6V ran down, we ran the jeep in the spare 12V's I brought along. He had a helluva hard time steering it at the slower speed.
I may also have to look thru the wheel alignment mods again and do it to this jeep... it seems the camber on the front wheels are getting worse.

I was planning to use the rubber tire gimmick on one of my projects, but I figured they would be rough on the battery and motors. Am I wrong to assume this?
On the beach sand, it ran really nice at 18V. However, after the 3x6V 12ah batteries were used up, we tossed in the 12V spares I brought along. At 12V, the loose sand was just too much for it... I was constantly having to push him out of loose sand or the slightest sandy incline. On pavement, however, the jeep was fine (though slow) on 12V... but he was constantly using it to go back & forth from the beach to the picnic area.
Oh, he also complained how much harder it was steering the jeep on 12V.
BTW, the batteries were Gruber 3x6V 12Ah SLA's and the gearbox/motors were swapped in from the X-Treme Machine.

I'm just glad the wheels collapsed on us on the offramp rather than while barreling down the freeway at full speed. MAN! Talk about good timing exiting the freeway! That is downright scary if it happens in full speed, and you were up in the sierra's also. Time to thank your lucky stars for that one!
@F125 - Yeah, I was tripping about that, cause I kept telling myself it's probably just the road conditions. If I was stubborn, I would've just kept right on going... I mean the vehicle was turning and making lane changes...
@Divinar - At $8.25 (plus shipping) for the steering linkage on HobbyMaster's site for the Jeep vs. the $500 the shop in Colfax quoted to fix the van.. not to mention the $280 for towing. yup! I'd have to agree with you.
