I was reading on this site a few weeks back, about this charger flipping to 12v from 6v when the power went out.I have a outside light that is on a breaker along with two buildings.I plug my charger in inside one to charge my batteries.I have to turn the breaker off for 2 seconds for my light to come on and stay on all night then it goes off by itself at daylight.I had too 6v 12ah batteries wired in parallel on a 6v 2amp setting with the charger plugged into a power strip with a breaker in it.I always turn the charger off, then turn my light on then the charger back on. .Well until last night I left the charger plugged up while i turned my lights on.I guess u could see that coming i did and i still did it.It was that way for a good 4 hours. The good thing was it had (100% SURE)no green charge lights on.I am pretty sure not 100%,but 98% sure the 12v 6v lights where off as well.I noticed what i had done i turned the power strip off and shook my head.I checked to see if the batteries where hot they where not. So flipped it back on (6v 2amp)charged the batteries fully.Has anyone tested this to see what happens yet? From what i read i didnt see anyone that had.I am now in the process of doing a test of my own.I have a 6v 4.5ah in a container.I have switched the breaker off then back on counting to 5.Now to my surprise (so soon 15mins)it has all lights off.Only the red connected light is on.I will leave this on for 8 hours.Any suggestion would be a great help. |

| It did charge at 12v 2amp when i first turned the breaker back on.Well the charge lights where on.Then sometime with in 15mins it shut all lights off,but the red connected light. It has been that way for an hour and 30 mins now.I assume it will stay that way for 8 hours. |

I'll do my macro shots when I get a moment; but, I highly recommend getting BOTH the schumacher battery maintainer 1.5 amp charger, and the schumacher 600A amp charger even if you have only 1 battery to charge at a time.
The 600A is a formidable charger for sure; mine even managed to charge a partially dead battery. But there are important 2 flaws limiting its use as a maintainer/trickle; 1 is that it defaults to 12V when power is reset making is potentially hazardous for trickle charging 6V batteries. And 2, it's cooling fan does a highly annoying screeching squeal when it kicks into high speed during charging, makes it difficult to be in the same room when it is in used.
The schumacher 1.5 amp maintainer (which surprisingly costs the same as the 6 amp 600A) is solidly built; the voltage selector is an actual tab; so there is no danger of accidentally charging at 12V. Since there is no cooling fan, it is absolutely quiet and it makes a great battery trickle charger to leave on all the time. However, it will not charge partially dead batteries (check with a new battery before chucking the unit if it will not fire!); and it takes a looong time to charge high capacity 12amp/hr batteries.
SO buy both, the 600a for quick charging and conditioning, and the 1.5 for trickle charging and maintanence. |

I second that highly annoying screeching squeal!I have been meaning to take mine apart to see if anything can be done to quiet it down a touch. |
